What is your name and age?
My name is Billy Morris and I am 17 years old.
What are you studying, or what did you study?
My education has not been typical, I was home educated from the age of 9. I took my GCSE’s a year early and now my studies now consist of an engineering diploma which I do online.
What do you sail?
I mainly sail my ILCA 6 but I am always keen to sail other boats and do so whenever possible.
Additionally, I will be moving the into ILCA 7 in the future.
Where do you sail?
While I am from Bury in Lancashire, almost all my sailing takes place away from home in fantastic venues such as Plas Heli, Weymouth and Vilamoura. However, I first learnt to sail at Delph Sailing Club in Bolton.
Who introduced you to sailing?
Unlike many I am from a non-sailing family and no one I knew ever introduced me to sailing. I first had the desire to take up the sport when I was 12 years old, and I saw someone sailing an old Laser whilst I was kayaking in the lake district.
Do you have a role model/inspirational person that you follow? If so, why do you find them inspirational?
There are so many inspirational athletes in our sport. Elliot Hansen has always been an inspiration of mine as a fellow northerner, I have always watched his results with great interest.
However, I would say I mostly look up to Tom Slingsby, who only started sailing at 15 yet went on to become Olympic champion and multiple-time world champion. His journey inspires me because, like him, I came to sailing later than most, and it showed me that with focus and hard work a late start can still lead to the top.
What would be your best advice or top tips for younger sailors or new sailors?
100% my top tip for newer sailors would be to spend as much time on the water as you can, and to really enjoy the process of learning rather than see it as something to be endured.
Tell us something about you that no one else knows (the more unusual the better!)
I can hold my own in the kitchen and considered a career as a chef.
What’s your superpower?
I would say my superpower is my metal resilience and my ability to digest Knowledge, sailing is as much a mental game as it is a physical one.
What bit of sailing kit can you not live without? And why? (clothing/gadget/etc)
I love my 40L Decathlon Dry bag haha. I’ve had it since day one and it’s the only piece of kit I’ve never had to replace. Perfect for your wet kit after a long day on the water.
What’s your ultimate dream? (this can be sailing or non-sailing)
My ultimate sailing dream like many, is to become a member of the British sailing team and go on to compete at Olympic level. More than that though, I want to learn as many skills and meet as many new people as possible on that journey.
