Santa SUP 2018 breaking the ice at the Stables, Kirkintilloch

Despite a less than promising forecast, an intrepid group of stand up paddleboarders met earlier today for a Santa SUP. The aim was to bring 2 paddleboard groups together (SUP Glasgow and Paddlefast’s Paddleclub Group – Central Scotland) for a social stand up paddle (SUP) in fancy dress in honour of the season.

Breaking the ice

A total of 10 paddlers turned out for the event dressed as Santa’s elves, Reindeer and of course Santa himself. Little did we know when we organised this social ice-breaker was going to involve breaking proper ice on the canal!

Emma from Paddlefast who coordinated the event says, “Paddleboarding doesn’t just have to be a summer or holiday sport. It’s great fun to get out on the water and enjoy our surroundings at any time of year.”

Usually we manage around 8-15 for a summer paddle so it’s great to see we haven’t been put off by the weather! Fortunately, the brilliant team at The Stables, Kirkintilloch had us tucked in by the fire for a Christmas lunch with rounds of hot chocolate, mulled wine and coffee afterwards. Even Haggis the dog was made welcome!

No experience needed!

Most of the people who attended the event only started paddleboarding this summer and each has their own story to tell. Jayne (from Falkirk) has just returned from Paris where she completed the SUP Nautique paddle – the world’s biggest paddleboard race with 800 entrants. Dave had to have a break from the sport after knee surgery this summer but is back on his board and the low-impact, balancing is helping his recovery.
